Rant: That woman at the farmer's market who said macarons are 'just fancy cookies'

I overheard this lady at the local market Saturday tell her friend that macarons are just overpriced almond cookies and anyone can make them. I almost dropped my bag of croissants. Like, have you ever tried getting feet on a macaron shell or even dealing with French meringue for the first time? I spent 4 hours last week fighting with my piping bag and still ended up with hollow shells. Read a blog or watch a real tutorial before you call them simple, please.

Question whether it's really worth getting bent out of shape over someone's casual opinion about a cookie. People say dumb stuff at markets all the time, no need to let it ruin your pastry run.

... and that's exactly what my friend Lisa said too until she actually tried making them. She spent a whole Sunday afternoon following this French baker's YouTube tutorial, got the almond flour sifted just right, aged the egg whites, even bought a digital scale for the measurements. Her first batch came out looking like sad little hockey pucks with no feet at all. She texted me a photo and was like "I take back everything I said about macarons being fancy cookies, I owe that market lady an apology." I still bring it up whenever someone says baking is easy.
