Spent $60 on a fancy bread starter kit that flopped hard
Back in 2019 I bought this artisan sourdough starter kit from a specialty shop. Paid $60 for the jar, the thermometer, and some heritage flour. Followed the instructions exactly for 2 weeks. Nothing happened. No bubbles, no rise. Just a jar of expensive goo. Turned out the starter pack was dead on arrival. Has anyone else had luck reviving a dud starter? I just chucked mine.

Yeah so I was one of those people who thought you just set it and forget it and it'll work on its own. Used to recommend starter kits to everyone. Then I got a dead one too and realized it's basically a gamble.

Man that sucks! I had the same thing happen with a $50 kit I got from a local bakery. They claimed it was "active and ready to use" but after a week of feeding it was just slimy goo. @joel_butler might be onto something about feeding it longer but mine smelled like nail polish remover after day 4 so I tossed it. Never buying a fancy starter again, I just make my own now from scratch with whole wheat flour and tap water.

Might be worth trying to feed it anyway. Sometimes those starters just need a few more days of regular feeding to wake up. Could've just been a slow batch.
