Tried to bake bread for my kid's class party and made a brick my husband wanted to frame
So 3 weeks ago my daughter tells me at 8pm on a Sunday that she signed me up to bring homemade bread to her 2nd grade class party the next morning. I had never baked bread in my life. I figured how hard can it be, flour, yeast, water, done. I mixed everything in one bowl, didn't measure the yeast, just dumped what looked right, and let it sit on the counter for like 20 minutes because I got distracted watching a show. When I put it in the oven it was basically a lump of wet dough. Forty minutes later I pulled out something that looked like a pale rock. My husband picked it up and knocked it on the counter and it made a real thud sound. He said it was the most solid thing he had ever held and asked if he could keep it on his desk as a paperweight. I ended up running to the grocery store at 6am for a loaf of sourdough and shoving it in a ziploc like nothing happened. My daughter still doesn't know. Does anyone have a bread recipe that a total beginner can actually not mess up?
Twenty minutes of rising time is basically zero, so that "rock" was never gonna be bread no matter what. And your husband wanting to frame it? Kinda dramatic for something that just means you skipped the wait. Grab any recipe that says "let rise until doubled" and actually time it, that one step is the whole game.
