Vent: my oven at 350 burns cookies but the toaster oven at 325 came out perfect
I made two batches of chocolate chip cookies on Saturday, same dough and same pan, and the big oven gave me hockey pucks with black bottoms while the little toaster oven gave me soft centers. I used an oven thermometer for the first time and my main oven runs about 40 degrees hot, which explains a lot of ruined birthday cakes over the past year. Now I am wondering if I should just trust the dial or get the whole thing checked by a repair guy. Has anyone else had an oven that lied to them like this, and did you fix it or just work around it?
Man, just trust the thermometer and stop overthinking it. Ovens drift, that is just how they work, and a 40 degree gap is annoying but not broken. You already found the fix, which is knowing your real temp and setting the dial lower. A repair guy will charge you a hundred bucks to tell you the same thing, and half the time the calibration fix does not even hold.
