I kept getting these hard lines on the sides no matter how many times I went back over them with the clippers. A barber at a shop off Elm Street watched me work and said the issue was I was combing with the grain before cutting, so the hair laid flat and I couldn't see the length gaps. He had me comb it up and back against the grain, then run my guard through it, and suddenly those lines just disappeared. I did it on 12 heads that week and every single blend came out smoother. Any of you guys comb a certain direction before you start your fade, or is it just me who was doing this wrong for so long?
Check the hair texture too before you commit to that trick. Against the grain works great on straight and wavy hair but on tight coils it can lift things unevenly and give you a whole new set of problems around the transition. The guy was right about seeing the length gaps though, that part is real no matter the hair type. Try combing up and out from the head instead of straight back next time, it shows the blend line even clearer on the sides.
