A regular told me his last barber used a straight razor on his neckline every time

He said it felt rushed and careless, which made me check my own speed on skin fades. How do you balance being quick with making sure the finish is clean?

Speed kills the finish. Gotta find that sweet spot where you're not wasting time but you're not rushing either.

I mean, in my shop we actually got faster when we switched to a 20 minute cut model and our quality went up. The timer keeps you from overthinking every little snip and your hands just learn to move with more confidence. I've seen guys take 45 minutes on a simple fade and still miss stuff because they're second guessing themselves the whole time. Maybe it's just me but I think people mistake slow for careful sometimes.

Honestly, that line about feeling rushed and careless is everywhere now, not just in barbershops. Tbh it feels like speed is the only thing that matters in service jobs, and quality just gets left behind. You really have to fight that pressure to slow down and do it right.
