My mentor said to always use a guard on the 0.5 setting for my first outline pass, and it saved my neckline game.

I thought it was too cautious, but after a month of cleaner fades, I get it. Anyone else have a specific guard rule they swear by?

Ever see a guy try to skip the 1 guard on the sides? My buddy did. Said he could freehand it. Ended up with a racing stripe right above his ear. Had to wear a hat for two weeks. Now he won't touch his clippers without a guard on first. That rule is there for a reason.

Oh man, that's the classic move right there. It's like a rite of passage to give yourself a bad self-haircut at least once. Bet he looked like he got in a fight with a lawnmower and lost. Gotta respect the guard system, it's the only thing standing between us and looking totally ridiculous.

Ever try to freehand a beard line without a guard? I did that once and carved a weird little valley into my cheek (it looked like a tiny cliff). Now I treat my trimmer like it's got training wheels that never come off.
