Overheard a client say 'a good barber can cut any hair type' and I had to bite my tongue

This was at a shop in Austin, and the guy was talking about his new hire. I've been cutting for 8 years and I strongly disagree. You can be skilled but still not be the best fit for every texture, like super tight curls or very fine, straight hair. It's about knowing your strengths. I focus on classic scissor work and fades on medium to coarse hair because that's what I've practiced on for thousands of cuts. Trying to be a master of all types just leads to okay results. What's a hair type you've decided isn't your specialty?

Yeah, that "master of all types" idea is how you get mediocre cuts. I stick to what I know works for me too.

Mediocre cuts" is my brand, tbh.

Come on, it's just hair. A decent barber can handle most common types well enough (like, it'll grow back). @alice_singh66 has a point about "mediocre" being fine for a lot of guys. You're overthinking a basic service.
