Rant: I hit 400 haircuts in a chair I bought for $75 and I think the cheap stuff is underrated
Everyone in this trade keeps telling new guys they need a $300+ chair or their back is done, and I think that is mostly hype. My $75 chair came off Facebook Marketplace in Akron back in January, and last Friday I counted out 412 haircuts in it. I write every cut on a tally sheet taped inside my station drawer, so the number is real, not a guess. The padding is shot and the pump leaks, sure, but I put that saved cash into two good pairs of shears and my hands feel fine. Sure, a fancy chair is nice, but nobody has shown me it makes the cut better. Anyone else still rocking cheap gear and doing just fine, or am I the only one?
A cheap chair that's already falling apart after 400 cuts is just a fancy way of saying you'll be buying another one soon, and that second purchase eats the savings real fast. The back pain from bad support doesn't show up in month one, it creeps in around year two or three when your spine has been fighting bad posture the whole time. Good shears save your hands but they don't do a thing for the lower back that's holding you up all day.
