Talked to an old pro about thinning shears and now I'm questioning everything
I was complaining to this barber who's been cutting hair for 30 years about how my thinning shears were getting dull. He told me I was using them too much and relying on them to fix bad cuts. That hit different because I realized I was just covering up my mistakes instead of learning to blend properly with scissors. He said 'if you need the shears to save the cut, you didn't set your base right.' Has anyone else dialed back on thinning shears after a seasoned barber called them out?

Oh come on, is it really that deep though? I get what he's saying but thinning shears are just another tool in the box, not some crutch that proves you're a bad barber. I use them to soften harsh lines and texture thick hair, not to save a bad haircut. Feels like old heads just like to gatekeep how we do things sometimes.
