Took me 5 years to realize I was choking out my fade by going too deep with the clipper at the start
A customer last Tuesday casually asked why my blends had that dark line mid-head and I had to stand there and admit I never thought to leave more weight up top before working down.

admit I never thought to leave more weight up top" sounds like you were overthinking it honestly. I mean yeah a dark line sucks but who's really gonna notice that except other barbers? Customers just see hair gone or hair not gone, they don't study it like we do. Five years is a long time to stress about something that basic, but I guess we all have those moments. Just blend it out and move on, it's not like you're doing surgery.

Oh man, that's the thing though. Customers definitely notice a bad blend even if they can't name what's wrong. They just know it looks off and then they're less likely to come back. I spent like a year figuring out I was rushing the whole process because I'd start with a guard that was way too low and then try to fix it with more passes. Leaving that extra bulk up top first gives you way more room to finesse the fade without hitting skin too soon. Five years is rough but at least now you got that aha moment locked in.
