Took me 6 years to realize I was over-combing the crown every time

I was in the middle of a cut on Tuesday and this client (a retired barber, of all people) just casually said 'you know you're putting way too much tension on that comb, right?' and I looked down and suddenly saw every bad fade I've ever given flash before my eyes - has anyone else had a simple comment like that completely rewire how they hold their tools?

Ended up doing the exact same thing when a buddy pointed out I was death-gripping my clippers like a sword. Makes you wonder what other bad habits are hiding in plain sight.

Man that retired barber probably saved you years of trial and error right there lol. I had a similar thing happen where a mentor told me to relax my thumb grip on the comb and suddenly my sections stopped pulling and bunching up. Once you loosen up that tension your fades actually start flowing smoother because the comb glides instead of dragging. It's funny how such a tiny adjustment changes everything about your speed and consistency. I still catch myself tensing up when I'm rushing though so I keep a little reminder note on my mirror to check my grip pressure.
