Appreciation post: garage sale hunting in the early 2000s vs now
I remember back in 2003 I'd hit up garage sales with a paper map and a fistful of dollar bills, finding old furniture for like $5 each. Now I scroll through Facebook Marketplace on my phone, but everything's priced like it's vintage or antique even when it's just scratched up particle board. Last Saturday I drove out to a sale in the suburbs where a guy was selling a solid oak table for $20... his daughter just wanted it gone. Made me wish people still priced stuff to move instead of trying to cash in. Anybody else feel like the thrill is gone with all the online pricing?

You know that part about "scratched up particle board" being priced like antique? That got me. Last weekend I saw a listing for a laminate bookshelf with chipped corners, priced at $60 because it was "vintage mid-century style." I laughed so hard I snorted coffee out my nose (true story, ruined my shirt). It's like everyone watched a YouTube video on flipping furniture and now thinks their old IKEA desk is a priceless artifact. The $20 oak table sounds like a unicorn find though, probably because the daughter wasn't trying to fund a retirement plan with it. I'm starting to think the real treasure at garage sales these days is just finding someone who isn't trying to get rich off a broken lamp.

Question whether people are really losing sleep over this, though. I mean, it's annoying when someone asks $60 for a chipped shelf, sure (been there, seen it myself at a flea market last month). But getting worked up enough to snort coffee and ruin a shirt? That feels like a lot of energy to spend on a bad listing you can just scroll past. People have been overpricing junk since garage sales started, probably before YouTube was even a thing. It's not like this is a new problem, you know? Maybe just take a deep breath and move on to the next sale where someone's selling their grandma's actual oak table for ten bucks.

Maybe the real problem is we've ALL become addicted to the DRAMA of bad listings.
