That $3 wicker basket I rescued from a garage sale ended up looking like a high-end decor piece
I found this sad, dusty wicker basket at a garage sale in Arlington last June for $3. It had a broken handle and some peeling paint, but the shape was solid. I spent about an hour cleaning it with a stiff brush and some warm soapy water, then painted it matte black. After swapping out the old handle with some leather cord, it now looks like something from a fancy home store. Has anyone else turned a thrift store reject into something they actually love?

Start by painting the whole basket before you fix the handle next time, the leather cord won't hold up well if you're carrying anything heavy in it. That black paint really makes the weave pop though, nice save for three bucks.

Hold on, I gotta disagree a little about painting the basket before fixing the handle. You actually want the handle on first so you can paint over the knots and where the leather meets the basket. If you paint first, you end up with bare spots around the attachment points that look messy later. I do agree that black was a smart choice for that thrift store find, really hides any old stains or weird patterns in the weave. Also, that leather cord might be fine if you reinforce it with a little glue where it connects. Have you tried that clear drying wood glue trick on the ends before?
