TIL not to trust a "vintage" Crock-Pot from a garage sale

Picked up this old Rival Crock-Pot for $5 at a garage sale in Elmira. Looked fine on the outside but it heated way too hot and burned a whole batch of chili. Had to toss it and learn the hard way these older models don't have proper temperature controls. Anyone else run into trouble with antique small appliances?

Nah, that old Crock-Pot probably just needed a little babysitting to work perfect.

My sister picked up a 1970s West Bend slow cooker at a thrift store near Buffalo, and that thing turned a pot roast into jerky in three hours. I told her what happened with my own garage sale find, a Rival from the 80s that scorched everything on Low. So @the_oscar is spot on, you really had to watch those old things like a hawk and stir every hour or so. They just didn't have the thermostats modern ones do, that's for sure.
