Hot take: That brown water in my toilet tank actually saves me money on cleaning supplies

I read a study last week from a plumber's blog that said leaving mineral deposits alone keeps your toilet seals working longer. I've been scrubbing my tank clean every month for 3 years and now I'm wondering if all that elbow grease just made things worse. Has anyone else stopped deep cleaning their toilet tank and noticed less maintenance issues?

You're looking at this from the wrong angle entirely. That brown gunk building up in your tank is a breeding ground for bacteria and mold that will absolutely wreck your flapper valve over time. Mineral deposits might not directly damage the rubber, but the biofilm that grows on top of it will eat through seals way faster than any cleaning product. Plus, all that crud can clog up the tiny holes in the rim of your toilet bowl, making your flush weaker and forcing you to flush twice which wastes water. Cleaning your tank monthly is the right move if you want to avoid a $50 plumber visit to replace a warped gasket that could've been prevented with a $2 bottle of vinegar.

Never thought about biofilm eating the seals, that actually changes my whole approach to this.
