My boss swears by standing meetings but sitting in my car for 10 minutes before going inside is what actually gets me through the day
Everyone at my office in Akron keeps saying you should get out of your car right away and walk in to build momentum, but I started doing the opposite about 5 weeks ago. I just sit there in the lot with the engine off and let my brain go quiet before I walk through the door. Those 10 minutes alone in my own little bubble do more for my mood than any pep talk or coffee run ever has. My boss told me last Tuesday that I seem calmer lately, and I didn't have the heart to tell him it's because I'm basically hiding in a parking lot. Does anyone else need that weird little buffer zone before they can face people?
My dad used to do this thing where he'd sit in the driveway for like 15 minutes after work before coming inside. My mom would get so mad, thought he was avoiding us. Turned out he just needed the quiet to switch gears from work brain to dad brain. I always thought that was kind of sad, but now reading your post I get it more. Sometimes you just gotta have that little space between one version of yourself and the next.
