Everyone swears by setting chain slack on the kickstand, but a guy at the Dayton swap meet showed me different
I used to check chain slack with the bike resting on its kickstand like most folks I know. Last month at a swap meet in Dayton, an old mechanic watching me adjust a rear derailleur told me to flip the bike upside down or hang it, because the suspension compresses under its own weight and the chain reads tighter than it really is. I tried it both ways on the same bike and got about 4mm of difference at the derailleur cage. Now I hang every bike from a hook before I touch the barrel adjuster. Anyone else notice their slack number shifts depending on how the bike is sitting?
