Found a way to keep my chain from rubbing the derailleur cage on steep climbs
Been fighting with chain rub on my old MTB every time I hit a grade over 15%. Tried adjusting the limit screws twice and even swapped the cable housing. Ended up just adding a 2mm spacer behind the cassette on that low gear side. $3 from the hardware store and it completely solved the issue. Anyone else found a cheap hack like this for drivetrain noise?

Huh, never thought of a cassette spacer for that.

Whoa, I gotta push back a little on that one @charliestone! I've actually had really poor results using cassette spacers with my 11-speed setup. The shifting got all sloppy on the biggest cogs, and I even had the chain drop between the cassette and spokes once. I feel like the tolerances on modern drivetrains are just too tight for spacers to work well unless it's a real specific setup with a compatible hub.

You bring up a good point about chain drops between the cassette and spokes - that happened to me once on a gravel ride and it was a real mess to fix on the trail. What specific hub were you running when you had these issues? I've heard some people say spacers work fine with Shimano hubs but cause nothing but trouble with the older Campagnolo ones where the freehub body is a different width. Just trying to figure out if this is a universal problem or more of a case-by-case thing depending on the hub manufacturer.
