I degreased chains with solvent for 6 years before an old guy at the shop showed me a rag
Back in my early days at a shop in Portland I would pull a chain, dunk it in a coffee can of solvent, and let it soak while I did other work. One slow afternoon a guy who had been turning wrenches since the 70s watched me do it and just shook his head. He grabbed a dry rag, ran the chain through his fist a few times, then said most of what I was dissolving was the lube that actually mattered. I started wiping first and using maybe a third of the solvent I used to, and chains stopped coming back dry and squeaky after a week. That was probably 8 years ago and I still think about how much solvent I poured into the parts washer for nothing. What is your go to for a quick chain clean when the bike is already on the stand?
