PSA: saw a shop in Dayton true a wheel with a busted spoke and still ride fine, and it got me thinking
Stopped by a co-op in Dayton last Thursday to grab some used parts and watched a guy bring in a rear wheel with one snapped spoke and a pretty wobbly rim. The volunteer there didn't even flinch, just popped the wheel in the stand, backed off the two spokes next to the broken one, and got the thing within about 2mm of true in maybe 8 minutes. I always figured a missing spoke meant a full rebuild or at least a new wheel, but he said as long as you relieve tension on both sides of the gap, the rim usually holds its shape fine for months. He did say if it's a rear drive side on a heavily loaded bike, don't push your luck past a couple hundred miles. Blew my mind a little since I've been quoting full rebuilds for something that takes one spoke and a tension check. Anyone here run a wheel with a missing spoke long term, or is that a bad habit I should not pick up?
