Showerthought: Should you really chase every chain with a new cassette or just ride it out?

For years i replaced chains and cassettes together like clockwork, but last month my buddy told me he runs a chain past 0.75 stretch on purpose and his drivetrain still shifts fine after 2,000 miles. Now i'm wondering if i've been wasting money or if he's just lucky - what's your cutoff for mixing old and new parts?

Might as well huck your chain into a wood chipper and call it "pre-seasoned.

Your buddy's probably fine until he hits a worn chainring and starts skipping under load. Same thing happens with people who skip oil changes thinking modern engines are invincible, everything works great until it suddenly doesn't.

Why would @averymartin want to pre-season a chain when they could just ride it through a puddle and call it "custom lubricated"?
