Still think about the old mechanic in Portland who showed me how to true a wheel using just a spoke wrench and his ear
He said 'the sound tells you more than the gauge ever will' while he tapped each spoke with a little screwdriver and I stood there like a dummy, has anyone else picked up a weird trick from an old timer that actually works better than the fancy tool?

My grandpa could set ignition timing on a small block Chevy by feel alone. He'd twist the distributor with the engine running and just listen to it purr, never touched a timing light in 40 years.

Read that same trick about timing by ear in an old Hot Rod magazine from the 70s. They said if you can't trust your own ears you got no business touching an engine.
