The bike shop guy told me to use WD-40 on my chain, 3 rides later I was walking home

At least you got three rides in, I once sprayed my chain with cooking spray because I ran out of lube and thought it was close enough. That bike seized up halfway down a hill and I nearly flew over the handlebars. Learned my lesson about taking advice from anyone who sells both bikes and fishing rods in the same shop.

My buddy Mike used actual WD-40 on his chain for like two months straight, thought it was the same thing as bike lube because his grandpa told him it worked on everything. Took him crashing into a bush at the park to finally switch over to the real stuff. That cooking spray story is wild though, I bet the smell of burnt canola oil was almost worth the crash... almost. Those combo shops scare me too, I've seen some sell kayaks and chainsaws right next to each other like it's a normal thing.
