Took me 8 years to realize I was greasing the wrong side of the brake pads
I've been doing brake pad swaps since I started wrenching at a shop in Austin back in 2016. Every time I'd put in new pads, I'd smear grease on the back plate where the caliper piston touches. This week a customer brought in their bike with squealing brakes after I did a pad install 3 weeks prior. I pulled the caliper apart and saw the grease had melted and worked its way onto the friction surface. Then it hit me. The grease goes on the metal backing, not the side that faces the rotor. I had the piston contact point greased but the pad backing was bare, so the pad was vibrating against the caliper. That's the squeal. I've been doing it backwards for 8 years. Had to rebuild the caliper because the grease contaminated the rotor. Has anyone else had a similar brain fart with something this basic?
