Burned 4 hours on a show that ended with a literal cliffhanger and no season 2
I binged this sci-fi series called 'The Event Horizon' on a random streaming app last weekend, thinking it would wrap up nicely after 8 episodes. Turned out the finale ended on a character dangling off a building with a freeze frame, and I found out the show got canceled in 2022. Has anyone else fallen for a dead show that left you with zero payoff?

Zero payoff" is rough, check Wikipedia before you start any streaming show.

Zero payoff" is spot on for a lot of shows, but I gotta push back a little, @paul286. The issue with checking Wikipedia before you start is you can accidentally spoil the best moments. I did that with "Dark" actually (read a plot summary thinking it'd help me keep track), and it killed the mystery for me halfway through season one. Some shows really do rely on the surprise, like "The Leftovers" or "Mr. Robot", where knowing the twist ruins the whole ride. But yeah, for stuff like "Lost" or "Game of Thrones" where they build up mysteries they never pay off, you're basically doing yourself a favor by spoiling the ending. It's a balancing act, I guess, between managing expectations and letting yourself be surprised.

Used to be a hardcore "go in blind" person for everything. But your point about balancing surprise with managing expectations makes total sense. Some shows really do need that Wikipedia check just to save the time investment.
