I finally gave that show about the chess prodigy a shot after my brother swore by it for months.

I was sure it would be boring, but the tension in episode 3, especially that final match in Moscow, completely hooked me. Has anyone else been surprised by a show they thought they'd hate?

Sometimes you just have to trick yourself into starting. I put on shows I think I'll hate as background noise while I'm folding laundry, and that's how I got into three different series. The first ten minutes are the hardest part to get past.

My friend Dave refused to watch that baking competition show for years, calling it boring. His wife finally put it on last weekend and he got totally sucked in. He was yelling at the TV when someone's cake collapsed, and he actually teared up when the nice older lady won. He texted me the next day asking if I'd seen the new season.
