My roommate said my TV taste was "background noise shows" and honestly she was right
About 3 months ago my roommate walked in while I was on season 4 of some network drama and said "you don't even watch this, you just let it play while you scroll." I got defensive at first but then realized she was right, I couldn't name a single character arc from the previous 2 seasons. So I made a rule, no more shows while I'm on my phone, and if I catch myself scrolling I pause it. First week was rough, I actually had to sit with the slow parts, but then I blew through The Bear and Shogun in like 10 days because I was actually locked in. Anyone else had to admit their binge list was mostly filler they weren't even paying attention to?
Man, this sounds like a lot of pressure to put on watching TV. Some shows are just meant to be background noise and that's totally fine. I rewatch The Office every single night while I'm doing stuff on my laptop and I couldn't tell you what happens in half those episodes, it just feels nice having it on. Not everything has to be a deep focus thing where you're locked in and analyzing every scene. Sometimes you just want noise while you eat chips and scroll. If you had fun binging The Bear then great, but making rules about pausing your TV feels like homework.
