I finally looked up how many working smithies were in my state
Found a state historical society list that said there were over 300 in 1900, and now there are maybe a dozen. Saw it on their website while trying to find an old forge location. Makes you wonder what the most common thing they made back then was.

Probably just made a lot of horseshoes, not exactly a huge loss.

Forget horseshoes, think about all the tools and nails. That's a ton of metalwork gone.
