My cousin said my forge welds are 'too clean' and it's been bugging me
We were working on a gate hinge in his shop, and he watched me do a scarf weld. He said, 'It looks perfect, like a machine did it. But does it have any soul?' He thinks a little scale or a subtle hammer mark shows it was made by a person. I've always aimed for the cleanest join possible, so this hit different. Do you think a perfect weld is the goal, or does a bit of character matter more?

Your cousin's talking about the difference between a part and a piece. A perfect weld is great engineering, but a little handwork tells the story of who made it. Maybe leave a single, clean hammer mark on the back as your signature.

Man, that's a tough one. I'd say a clean weld is the REAL skill, but your cousin's got a point about character too.
