My first year I heated steel like a total idiot
Used to just dunk hot steel in cold water every time. Took 3 cracked blades and a trip to an old smith in Austin to learn I needed to normalize first. Has anyone else ruined good work from rushing the cool down?

Three cracked blades sounds like a lot, is this really that common or just bad luck?

Oh come on, three cracked blades is barely a learning curve. I've seen guys ruin a whole batch of knives before they figure out heat treat. People act like making a knife is rocket science but really you just gotta not be in a hurry.
