Pro tip: I tried quenching a small leaf in a bucket of old motor oil instead of my usual quench tank.
I was cleaning the garage and had a half-full 5-gallon pail of used 10W-40, so I figured why not for a quick test piece. The leaf came out with this weird, almost waxy black finish that's actually pretty tough and hasn't rusted in two weeks. Has anyone else gotten a decent finish from something they were just about to throw out?

Old transmission fluid? That sounds like a great way to make sure nothing ever works again! I can just picture the thick, burnt sludge gumming up everything it touches. You'd probably need a whole new engine after that experiment. Honestly, some of the suggestions people come up with are just wild. Let's stick to the normal stuff that doesn't ruin our tools.
