Serious question, who actually uses those fancy anvil stands?

I was at a hammer-in up in Vermont last month and watched a guy forge a whole drawknife on a stump he dragged out of the woods. He said he's never used a commercial stand in 40 years and his work looks better than mine. Am I wasting money on this metal tripod setup?

My buddy Mike from the anvil sales group has a story about that. He was at a demo two years ago and this old timer showed up with his anvil just sitting on a railroad tie, not even bolted down, just sitting there. Mike asked him about it and the guy said "son, if your hammer blows are hard enough to knock this thing over, you're doing it wrong." Mike spent the next six months trying out different stumps and logs before he finally sold his fancy stand at a loss. Now he just uses a chunk of oak he found behind a barn.

Honestly, @jamesm38, is it really that deep? It's just an anvil.

My neighbor swore his anvil never moved once in forty years on a flat rock.
