The day I found out I'd been hardfacing everything wrong for 8 years

Was grinding down a worn excavator bucket in Tulsa last fall and an old guy walks by, asks why I'm using 1/16 rod on a 1/2 inch lip, and it hit me that I'd never once matched rod size to base metal thickness, just grabbed whatever was closest, so has anyone else had a similar moment where a stranger's offhand comment exposed a habit you'd baked in for years?

Watched a pro welder fix my bad beads and realized I'd been running too hot for years.
