The time my power hammer died in the middle of a big Damascus billet

I was in my old shop in Bend, working on a 200-layer billet. The hammer just stopped, no sound, nothing. I had to hand forge the rest with a sledge while my buddy tried to fix the motor, which took about three hours. We got it done, but my arms felt like jelly for two days. Ever had a major tool fail at the worst possible moment?

Three hours with a sledge sounds rough, but is that really the worst case? At least you had a buddy and could finish the job. What would you have done if you were alone or the billet was completely cold?

Actually, a cold billet is easier to move.

Nah @hugomurray, a hot billet moves way easier than a cold one, no contest.
