TIL from a 1920s trade journal that a proper forge fire needs a 6-inch coal bed for even heat.

I found this old 'American Blacksmith' magazine at a flea market in Toledo, and it said a shallow fire is the main reason for cold spots in your work, so has anyone else tried building their fire deeper?

Wouldn't a deep fire just waste coal, though?

Six inches? That's barely a starter fire.
