Watched an old timer at the county fair forge a perfect leaf spring knife in under 10 minutes and realized I've been overcomplicating my heat treat this whole time.
He didn't even use a pyrometer, just went by the color of the steel and the sound it made on the anvil, and now I'm wondering if I should ditch all my fancy gear for a weekend and try it his way next Tuesday; anyone else ever learn more from watching someone work than from a class?
