A photographer at my niece's birthday in Reno told me to stop stabbing the shutter button, and my blurry pics got way better
I used to get blurry shots at every family party and just blamed my phone. Back in March at my niece's birthday party in Reno, this guy who shoots weddings saw me mashing the shutter button at a cake smash and flat out told me, 'You're jabbing it like it owes you money, that's why everything's soft.' I was kinda ticked off but he showed me on his screen, every single shot I grabbed had a tiny smear from the phone moving when I pressed. So I changed two things. First, I tap the screen to lock focus on the face before I shoot anything. Second, I hold my breath and squeeze the button slow, like a trigger, not a poke. Did it at my buddy's wedding two weeks later and out of maybe 40 shots only 4 were bad, versus like half before. If you're getting blurry people pics indoors, try the lock focus plus breathe out slow thing and tell me if it helps. Anyone got a trick for shots where the kid won't sit still at all?
That cake smash story hits home. My daughter's 4th birthday back in 2019, I got maybe 3 good shots out of 60 and I blamed my phone for a year. The trigger squeeze thing is real, I learned it shooting rifles as a kid and never thought to use it on a camera. Tapping to lock focus first is smart too, my phone loves to grab the background when there's a window behind everyone. For the kid who won't sit still, the only thing that works for me is burst mode and then deleting the 90 percent that are junk. I just hold it down and let it rip, better to sort through the mess later than miss the one where they're actually looking at you.
