Just realized my night shots got way better after I stopped bracing my phone on the car roof, 3 weeks apart, same spot in Denver
I take a lot of photos in downtown Denver after work, mostly neon signs and old buildings, and for months they came out dark and smeared. I was bracing my phone on my car roof or a parking meter every time, thinking steady was steady. Three weeks ago I started just holding it with both hands, elbows tucked in, and breathing out slow before I tap the button. Same phone, same guy, same 8 pm light, and the difference is not small. The roof shots had this weird double edge on every sign, and the hand held ones are clean unless I rush. My theory is the phone was fighting the metal and picking up tiny vibrations, but I don't actually know. So here's the thing I want to argue about. Half of you will say any brace beats no brace, physics is physics, and I just got lucky. The other half will say it depends what you brace against, and a car roof is basically a speaker for every footstep and passing bus. I tested it 6 nights in a row and the hand held shots won 5 of them, which is not science but it's something. Where do you all land on bracing, and has anyone else had a brace make things worse?
