Finally caved and bought Crokinole after 10 years of thinking it was overhyped
I always saw Crokinole boards at conventions and thought it was just a fancy version of hockey with your fingers. Played one at a friend's cabin up near Lake George last winter during a snow day and we were at it for 4 hours straight. Got my own board 2 weeks later from a guy on Etsy and now my game group requests it over everything else. Anyone else have a game they ignored for years then got hooked on?

Fighting over wax and finger sliding technique" is hilariously accurate, I've definitely caught myself getting heated over the perfect amount of powder on the board like it's a life or death decision.

Low stakes fun is the whole point though, what's wrong with getting into the details?

Hey, slow down there. I've played Crokinole maybe twice and it was fun enough, but 4 hours straight? On a snow day? Sounds like you were just trapped in a cabin with nothing else to do. I've seen those boards go for 300 bucks and people fight over the wax and the finger sliding technique like it's some kind of sport. I dunno, feels like a lot of hype for flicking discs at a hole. If you're serious about strategy games, go play Carrom or something that actually takes skill. But hey, if it keeps your group happy and off their phones, maybe I'm missing something.
