Hot take: being a 'speed player' is ruining your game experience

I used to race through every game to maximize plays per night, but after a buddy told me I was missing half the strategy, I slowed way down and started actually enjoying the table talk and bluffing. Anyone else been told they play too fast and had to adjust?

...and that's exactly what happened to me with a game called Cosmic Encounter. I was flying through my turns, throwing down ships and cards without even looking at the other players' faces. A guy at the table finally stopped me and said "you're not even watching what we're doing, are you?" That hit hard because he was right. Did you find that slowing down actually changed how often you won, or just how much fun you had?

People make it sound like a therapy session or something. It's just a board game. If you're having fun tearing through your turns, who cares if you're not making eye contact with the other players. Some of the best games I've won were when I was focused on my own strategy and didn't get distracted by everyone else's table talk.
