I used to think you could just wing it teaching new games
We were at my buddy's place in Portland trying to learn Root. I just started reading the rulebook out loud and it was a total mess, everyone was confused after 20 minutes. I stopped and grabbed some coins to act as the warriors and used a notepad to track points step by step. It clicked for everyone once they could see it. How do you guys handle teaching a complex game for the first time?

The Dice Tower guys always say to teach victory conditions first.

Oh, that's exactly how I do it too. I always explain who goes first and how a turn works before anything else. It gives people a frame for all the other rules.
