My friend said we should play a 4 hour game with his new group and I was not ready

Last Saturday, my friend Ben invited me to a game night with his hardcore group. They pulled out this huge game called 'Twilight Imperium' that he said takes about 4 hours to finish. I usually play stuff like Catan, so I was totally lost by the second turn with all the rules. The worst part was when one guy, Mike, got really mad because I traded with the wrong person and 'broke the meta' for the whole table. I learned that some gaming groups have a whole culture you need to know before you jump in. Has anyone else walked into a game night and felt like you needed a rulebook just for the people?

Yeah, that "secret handshake" feeling @the_eric mentioned is real. Next time, ask your friend to give you a heads up on the group's weird unspoken rules before you sit down.

Ever try to play chess when you only know checkers? That's what my first D&D game felt like. I used a healing potion on a door because I thought it looked sick. The dungeon master just put his head in his hands for a solid minute. Some groups have so many inside rules it's like you need a secret handshake just to roll the dice.

Feel for you, that sounds rough. Getting yelled at over a trade in a game you just learned is brutal. I've been the new guy in a group that had years of inside jokes and weird rules about how to play. It makes you not want to take your turn. Dakota_burns83 is right, a warning about that stuff is basic friend stuff. Like, tell me if the group hates a certain strategy or if someone will lecture me for ten minutes. Otherwise you just sit there feeling stupid.
