Question about the $40 custom insert I bought for Terraforming Mars that didn't fit my box

I picked up a laser cut foam insert from a seller on Etsy for $40, thinking it would speed up setup for my group at our Tuesday meetup. Turns out the guy measured the older edition box, and my copy is the newer one that's about 2 inches shorter inside. I spent 3 hours trying to sand the foam down before I gave up and just went back to baggies. Has anyone else run into inserts that claim to fit but don't, and is there a good way to check box dimensions beforehand?
