Showerthought: The guy at the game store who wouldn't sell me a copy of 'Agricola'

He looked me dead in the eye and said, 'You seem like a 'Wingspan' person, and I don't want to see that game go to a bad home.' Has anyone else been gatekept from a purchase?

Man, that just rubs me the wrong way. A store's job is to sell games, not judge who's worthy of them. What if that person was buying Agricola as a gift, or wanted to try something heavier? The clerk made a snap call based on nothing. It feels pretty arrogant to decide what someone else might enjoy. Let people make their own choices and maybe even their own mistakes.

Oh man, that reminds me of a time at my local spot! I saw a guy try to buy Mage Knight for his kid's birthday, and the clerk spent ten minutes talking him into Catan instead. I get wanting to help, but @williamb29 is right, you never know the full story. That dad might have been a hardcore gamer himself, ready to teach it! It just feels like some clerks treat the counter like their own personal game night, picking players.

My local shop had a copy of that brutal war game, Twilight Struggle, behind the counter for months. The owner would just shake his head if someone new asked about it. He said he was waiting for the right person, someone who had the time and a willing friend to really learn it. He finally sold it to a regular who played historical games every Tuesday. I kind of get it, some games are a big commitment.
