Spent 45 minutes explaining the rules of Splendor to one guy and he still tried to stack chips
Ngl, I hosted game night last Saturday and this one friend kept asking if he could combine two different gem tokens for a single purchase. I told him no like 7 times and even showed him the rulebook page for Splendor, but he still grabbed 3 reds and 2 blacks and said 'close enough.' Has anyone else had a player just completely ignore how resources work?

Oh man, I totally feel your pain here. Last year I had a guy in my group who kept trying to use gold tokens as wildcards for everything even though Splendor doesn't work like that. What finally worked was I made him sit out one round and just watch how the rest of us played. He saw that nobody was stacking colors or mixing chips, and after watching two full turns he finally got it. Sometimes people just need to see the flow instead of hearing the rules explained five times.

Well, my friend had to do that with someone who kept grabbing other players' chips!

I once had a buddy try to use a single yellow token as five different colors in one turn and I just sat there blinking at him for a solid ten seconds. His defense was that he's colorblind so he figured it all looked the same anyway, which I guess is fair but also not how the rules work. The watching strategy williamm82 mentioned is actually brilliant because I tried just reading the rulebook aloud to my group and three people fell asleep before I got to the nobles section. Now I just make the new person sit next to me and I narrate every move I make like some kind of bad sports commentator until they either get it or ask to switch seats.
