Spent two hours trying to get the insert for my new game to fit right

Just got the new version of that big space game, you know the one. The box came with this thick cardboard insert to hold all the pieces. I figured it would just drop in, but it was a solid quarter inch too long on one side. I spent like 20 minutes trying to force it, thinking I was just dumb. Then I got a ruler and measured the box, and the insert, and they were different. I ended up carefully cutting a small strip off the long edge with a box cutter, which took forever because I didn't want to mess it up. The whole thing, from opening the box to finally getting it to sit flat, took almost two full hours. I felt so silly for how long a simple storage fix took. Has anyone else had a game insert that just would not fit the box it came in?

Oh man, that is the worst feeling. I've totally been there with a different game, same exact problem. The insert was just slightly too big and it was driving me crazy. What worked for me was actually warming up the cardboard a bit with a hair dryer for a minute, just to make it a little more flexible. Then I could gently press it in and it formed to the box shape. Might save you some cutting next time.

It's the same with everything now. You buy something and the most basic part of it, like it fitting in its own box, is just wrong.

That's actually the punchboard for the player boards, not a box insert. It's meant to be popped out and assembled. The rulebook probably mentions it in the unboxing section.
