That one friend who said 'just play it by ear' for game night setup was dead wrong
My buddy Mark insisted we didn't need to pick a game beforehand for our 6 person group last Friday. He said we could just riff on what people felt like when they got there. Ended up spending 45 minutes arguing while folks scrolled their phones, and we finally just played Catan for the 100th time. Does anyone else have a firm rule about pre-selecting games before people show up, or is going with the flow fine?

Whoa, hold on. You sure you actually lost 45 minutes? Because that sounds like a solid 20 minutes tops unless someone was really dragging it out. My group tried the "play it by ear" thing once, and it was a nightmare. We ended up with three people wanting a party game, two wanting a heavy Euro, and one guy who just wanted to watch Netflix on his phone. Now I always send out a group text the day before with three options and a poll. People vote by the morning, and the winner gets set up before anyone even shows up. Catan for the 100th time is its own special kind of punishment, so yeah, picking beforehand is the only way to go.

Gotta ask though is this really that deep? Like yeah it sucks losing 45 minutes but you still played a game at the end of the day so it worked out. Some people act like a rough game night is a war crime.
