The 14th play of Gloomhaven finally made the rulebook click

My group kept messing up monster focus for weeks. We'd finish a scenario and then argue about whether the brute should have moved that way. Last Saturday, on our 14th play, I read the line about 'nearest hex with a path' out loud and it just landed. We played three scenarios back to back without a single rules lookup. Has anyone else had a rule suddenly make sense way later than it should?

Man, you guys were arguing over monster focus for weeks? That's brutal. Most groups just pick a spot and move on, then look it up later if someone gets wrecked. Reading the line out loud finally making it click is cool and all, but it sounds like you spent more time fighting each other than the actual game. I get the rules being fuzzy, but at some point you gotta just roll with the closest guess and keep the game moving. Three scenarios without a lookup is a win, sure, but that's more about your group finally relaxing than the rulebook being some impossible puzzle. If it took 14 sessions to figure out where a monster walks, maybe the problem was you guys never actually read the page in front of you.
