Why does nobody talk about the original print run of 'Dune' being only 500 copies?

I was reading an old article on a collector's site and found out the first edition of the 'Dune' board game from 1979 had a print run of just 500 units. That explains why a decent copy goes for over a thousand dollars now. Has anyone here actually played one of those originals?
